Recipe Idea: Mulled Apple Cider

Recipe Idea: Mulled Apple Cider

Having the most frugal grocery budget in the world isn’t going to help you any if you can’t put together at least a few healthy, tasty, and cheap eats! Every month, The Outlier Model features a cheap recipe idea, along with the cost breakdown.

It’s not the holidays without a warm cozy drink!  One of my favourite drinks to curl up with is a nice, spicy apple cider.  We often get them at the Vancouver Christmas Market, but they are pretty easy to make at home.  This apple cider recipe uses unsweetened fruit juices with no added sugar.

Mulled Apple Cider

  • 4 cups (1 litre) unsweetened cranberry juice blend or cranberry cocktail ($1.50)
  • 4 cups (1 litre) unsweetened pure apple juice ($1.50)
  • 1 orange peel (… free?)
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and sliced ($0.10)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks ($0.10)
  • 4 whole allspice berries ($0.05)
  • 4 whole cloves ($0.05)

Add all of the ingredients into a large pot and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for approximately one hour.  Strain, and enjoy while warm!

You can also garnish the drinks with an orange wedge or cinnamon stick before serving.

Servings: 8

Cost per serving: $0.40

Feeling adventurous?: Add a splash of rum before serving to make this a slightly more “adult” drink.

  4. Vancouver Christmas Market? Sounds fun!I’m planning a trip up there sometime soon for sure. Maybe not in time for the market haha, but just to see the city I’ve been hearing so many great things about.

Yeah, it’s a traditional German Christmas market that serves sausages, mulled wine and cider, and traditional crafts. Let us know if you manage to get up to Vancouver!

Looks tasty :0) I need to learn how to mix more drinks like this. Much cheaper than buying one in a restaurant.

  6. This is one of my favourite Christmas beverages, preferably with the rum included. It’s surprisingly unpopular in my area though, and I can’t imagine why, it’s delicious!

That looks phenomenal… Just wish I could get Mrs Scot to like mulled anything!
