Updates: October 7-13
Ok, I promise this will be the last update for awhile where I mention the garden. I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about it! This morning, we braved the rain (Vancouver has finally decided to start being Vancouver again) and harvested the remainder of our crop. CF has a full year end garden summary coming this week, but as you can see from the picture, we had a pretty good crop for just ~50 square feet of growing space.
We’re venturing out to take part in the age old Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest this evening as well. We went once a couple of years ago, but didn’t budget enough money – it’s rather expensive if you’re not in Germany. Not a great PF decision, but we have targeted it for a month or so and look forward to a night out socializing. If the weather is as poor where you are as it is here, here’s some indoor reading for the weekend:

- I always like these types of posts: Steve at Grocery Alerts shares the best products to buy in October. Very useful!
- Do you have family members who are bad with money? I sure do, and it can be really hard to figure out a way to help them. Over at Plunged In Debt, Catherine shares her experiences with try to help out her sister with budgeting.
- Young Adult Money provides a great explanation of health insurance exchanges in the US. I had no idea!
- Modest Money gives some more tips on blogging, this week on blog link building.
- I really liked Jordann’s post this week at My Alternate Life on some young adult frustrations – there is a lot of truth to what she says.
- Sticking with the theme, Mo Money Mo Houses responded with How the Recession Has Motivated Me to Kick Ass at Life. My thoughts exactly!
- Being a leader can help you advance in your career, and being led by one can have the same effect. Add Vodka looks at 5 Things to Look for in a Leader.
- Think beer is expensive in Canada? Freedom Thirty Five Blog found a really telling infographic about the cost of beer relative to hourly earning. It’s not as bad as we think!
- Work Save Live is getting into College Football lately and has a great tailgating recipe: Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip!
- I had always considered Hyundai to be a decent brand, but I’ll think twice about buying one after reading See Debt Run’s experience with the warranty!

You did pretty good with your crop this year. I have one more post about our garden and that should be it for this year as well… I have tomatoes in our spare room sitting in the window area and my tomatillos. Gardening is fun and always something to chat about. Do you save your seeds?
We just have one more as well, scheduled for first thing Monday morning. We didn’t save seeds this year – none of our plants went to seed, I think because (1) we started late in the season and a lot of the plants were still young and (2) we started from seedlings in a lot of cases and I suspect many, if not most, were sterile hybrids.
Did you run into Jeremy at the Octoberfest? I love the pics of your crops and I can’t wait to read the update for the year. I’m sure you saved a ton of money by growing your own food!
Hehe… we were supposed to meet up, but *someone* forgot to buy his ticket ahead of time and it was sold out at the door…
