Contest: ID this plant!

This contest is now closed – thanks for entering! Congratulations to Ying for correctly guessing “Collard Greens” via Twitter!

Here’s another Friday quickie for you guys: Help us ID this plant!

We have a community garden plot which occasionally gets seedling donations.  We received this mysterious plant recently in an unlabelled pot!  I have a pretty good idea of what it is, but we won’t know for sure until a few months from now.

What do YOU think it is??

But I thought it’d be fun to have a mini-contest  :)  Here’s the deal: Leave a comment with your guess, share on Twitter with your guess, or include this post in a link with your guess.  When I identify this plant, I’ll randomly choose a winner from among the correct guesses.  Each share/link gets you an entry.

As a prize: $5 gift card to Starbucks to enjoy a coffee while contemplating your garden.

Hint: It’s a fall/winter plant!

I’m not a gardener but I’m thinking broccoli or cauliflower. With the light leaves, my actual guess is cauliflower. It would be cool having a mystery plant, not knowing what it will turn into until it starts to develop.

  2. My mother would know this!

    I say pumpkin.

  3. Michelle says:

It looks like cauliflower to me! I would just like to toot my own horn and say that I *could* ask my dad (he’s a botanist!) but I didn’t. :)

  4. I’m going brussel sprout.

  5. I was going to guess broccoli or cauliflower, but since those are taken, I’ll go with my next choice: cabbage?

  6. Lisa says:

Looks like it could be kohlrabi.

  7. It’s definitely a brassica. I’m going to go with Brussel sprouts. They tend to be a bit taller as seedlings than the other brassica.

  8. I’d guess broccoli or cauliflower, but I really have no idea.

  9. Mmmm…winter squash? I really need to brush up on my gardening.

  10. Mike says:

    Cauliflower

Ok, I know the post is old, but I think that is brocolli (No, I didn’t cheat and look at the other comments) :)
