Updates: Oct 21 – 27

I’ve got a confession to make. I don’t like Halloween. CF and I have tried to get into it in the past, and always been disappointed. There is much made of going out to the bar or to a party and it just never delivers on the build up. That said, for the past two years I’ve worked at the wine store on Oct 31, which is always good for a laugh. I’m not working the 31st this year, but I am working tonight which I’m figuring will be the main party night anyways. Should be entertaining!

I didn’t totally shun the Halloween festivities, as we spend the afternoon at work decorating pumpkins yesterday. I can’t take credit for my team’s carving skill as I was fortunately teamed up with artsy engineers. I was responsible for the accessories, so I take full credit for the strategic use of small personal bathroom mirrors as side view mirrors and chewie monster truck wheel dog toys for the wheels.

Check out some great posts from around the web this week:

  • Ever wonder why hot dogs come in 10s but buns come in 8s or 6s?  So did Femme Frugality!
  • I laughed when I saw this over at Plunged In Debt because I remember my own indignation when I first found out that whitening toothpaste is a scam.
  • Brian and I used contractors to remodel the bathroom in our first condo.  The guys we hired arrived via skateboard, lol!  But they did an awesome job.  But as The Frugal Path reminds us, it’s good to be cautious and not simply choose the cheapest option.
  • I liked these care package gift ideas from Unique Gifter.  If you have any students in your family, it’s a great way to show them that someone’s thinking about them!=
  • Afford Anything explains arbitrage and how it can be used to buy your freedom.
  • It’s often thought that making things yourself is always a money saver. As Mo Money Mo Houses found out with her cake pop experiment, it’s not always the case.

Thanks to everyone who included us this week. I apologize if I’ve missed anyone, as I don’t seem to be receiving all the pingbacks. If I’ve missed you, drop us a note.
