Financial Advantages of Spring Cleaning

dining-room-1158266_1920Spring is almost here, meaning it may be time to consider a deep cleaning, decluttering, and reorganizing session for your home. Some people may not look forward to spring cleaning but the end results are almost always worth it in the end. Not only will it make your house look ten times better, but there are some financial advantages of spring cleaning to consider as well.

Find Money

It’s always nice to find money when you clean up even though it’s definitely not a guarantee. Finding money or spare change while you’re cleaning or organizing can be a great way to boost your savings since you probably didn’t even know about the extra money in the first place. Another thing I like to do is collect spare change I have around the house to save for a rainy day. Check your couch cushions, underused closets etc. for any spare change. You can also take it to a bank or store like Jewel and use their machine that converts your coins into cash so you can keep up with the money easier.

Free up Space

Being able to clear out some stuff means more room is available for you to do whatever you desire. You can have a better idea of any home improvement projects that need to be done in the future. If you didn’t clean up, you would have never thought to make a move like that. Doing these changes can cost you money but also save you money in the long run.

Sell Extra Items

During spring cleaning season, you can knock out two things at once. Spring cleaning your house you not only get rid of some clutter, but you can make some money out from your items as well. When you come across items that are in perfectly good condition but just aren’t useful to you anymore, consider selling them. Choose whether you’d like to sell your items online, in person, or both. You can ask around and see if anybody needs a certain item, post ads on Craigslist, Amazon, or Ebay, or join a local Facebook buy, sell, and trade group.

Tax Write-Off

If you have a lot of items to donate, take them to your local Goodwill and ask for a receipt because you can write off donations on your taxes. Some places that take donations will even go so far as to give you print out of the information that you would need to fill out for the tax write off right before you leave the store. You can also feel pretty good knowing that you are giving something to someone who made need it and find it useful instead of allowing it to sit in your home and collect dust.

Find Things you Didn’t Know you Had

Spring cleaning can help you uncover some items you never knew you had. It’s so easier for clutter to just build up even if you have a good grip on what items you bring into your home and clean often. I don’t know how many times, I’ve bought something new thinking I didn’t have it or lost it somehow before, only to find it in my home later after cleaning up.

Using what you have and avoiding buying things again and again will naturally save you money and allow you to cut down on your spending.

What forgotten treasures have you found while spring cleaning and how does it help your finances?
