Updates March 18 – 24

CF and I decided to get away for the weekend, so this post comes to you live from Whistler Village! We are currently staking out a Starbucks while we wait for our hotel room to be ready…here’s what we’ve been reading to pass the time:

  • From CF: An excellent long read which touches on the increasing demands placed on workers.  I was shocked at how many companies casually implied that it would be normal for me to work 50-60 hours a week on a regular basis.  This article talks about the evolution of the standard 40 hour work week and why it actually results in better productivity.

  • Sarah at Get Rich Slowly asks “will continuing education make you richer?” I think it’s really important to keep in mind how much more you’ll be able to make after getting a Masters or PhD as compared to how much it cost you to get the degree. If the cost of the degree is $30,000 and you’ll only make $5,000 more per year, it will take you 6 years (and lost wages while you’re in school) to make that up. Something to think about.

  • Mr. Money Mustache discusses how to sell frugality to your spouse. I was more on the receiving end of this conversation than the giving, but I think it provides a good perspective for introducing anyone to the concept, spouse or not. I have a difficult time explaining it to family and friends and this article offers some helpful tips – with more to come!

Well, here’s to hoping our hotel room will be ready soon! We have a busy weekend of eating, drinking and studying (CF) ahead of us – and a gorgeous weekend to boot.
