Update: January 29 – February 4

Well, we are solidly into the period between New Year’s and Easter in which there are no holidays. I find this time to be both very productive (at work and at home) but also sometimes monotonous and lengthy. So, no poignant thoughts or long-winded outrages today – poke around the links below and you might find one though!

  • Brian and I pick up the occasional group deal coupon for cheap dates or gifts. But we’ve been almost burned before when we’ve forgotten to use a voucher. (The yoga in that case graciously allowed is to redeem the voucher late – good karma!)  Canadian Finance Blog  talks about some of the pitfalls of group deal sites and offers some useful suggestions for using them.

  • Old age security (OAS) and other retirement funding issues are getting a lot of attention in Canada these days. Canadian Dream discusses why Old Age Security Reform is Needed and I couldn’t agree more. Reading the article, I learned a lot about OAS and it’s really an easy fix. Decreasing the threshold for OAS clawback would save a ton of money instantaneously while having very little or no impact on those collecting OAS. This would only affect retirees who already get more than enough money to support themselves. The public uproar over OAS reform is uncalled for.

  • I’m not sure what to say about Mr. Money Mustache’s Big Mistake, but I wanted to link to it. It’s a good reminder that by thinking big and not allowing your mistakes to define you, you can still be successful. Being successful is a state of mind, not luck, circumstance or other outside influence. MMM embodies this and I appreciated the story.
